A fragile blanket of a human body

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

A poem by Kabir Das and my translation is here. Kabira was a 15th century poet born in a muslim family and had an influential Hindu teacher. So, Kabira write sufi style poems about Hindu philosophy and Indian culture in a beautiful way.

When a child is born ; the child cries and the whole world smiles

Live in such a way that when you die, you have reasons to smile and the world shall miss you and cries

This blanket called chadhariya is transparent, fragile and pure which is made in a very intricate way with finesse and artistry.

which is compared to a human body created by the creator.

This blanket is woven through a 8 lotus petal shaped spinner

and made with 5 true elements ( earth, air, fire, water and space)

It took about 9 to 10 months to weave but we take no time to soil and dirty this beauty

When this transparent ,pure blanket comes home from being made

its given to the dyer to put colors who bring out the vibrancy of that blanket

( as a child would come home and given to parents and teachers( dyers) .Their job is to breathe life of vibrancy into the innocent pure soul.

This blanket is only been given to you for a few days and we foolishly do not understand the difference between permanence and what temporary,

And We soil it little by little everyday

(Explaining, how this blanket should be worn or body be treated )

But there are great philosophers, poet sages and warriors who wore it so well, they made this blanket more pure by just wearing it.

I , Kabira, is planning to wear it in such a way that I return it back in a same way it was given to me.

Poem by Kabir Das

Kabīrā Jab Ham Paidā Hue

Jaga Hase Ham Roye

Aisī Karanī Kara Chalo

Ham Hańse Jaga Roye

Chadariyā Jhinī Re Jhinī

He Rāma Nāma Rasa Bhinī

Aṣṭa Kamalā Ka Charkhā Banāyā

Pañca Tattva Kī Pūnī

Nava Dasa Māsa Bunana Ko Lāge

Mūrakha Mailī Kinhī

Chadariyā Jhinī Re Jhinī

He Rāma Nāma Rasa Bhinī

Jaba Morī Chādara Bana Ghara Āyā

Rańga Reja Ko Dinhī

Aisā Rańga Rańgā Rańgare Ne

Lālo Lāla Kar Dinhī

Chadariyā Jhinī Re Jhinī

He Rāma Nāma Rasa Bhinī

Chādara Oḍha Shańka Math Kariyo

Yeh Do Dina Tumko Dinhī

Mūrakha Loga Bheda Nahi Jāne

Din Din Mailī Kinhī

Chadariyā Jhinī Re Jhinī

He Rāma Nāma Rasa Bhinī

Dhruva Prahlāda Sudāmā Ne Oḍhi

Śukadeva Ne Nirmala Kinhī

Dāsa Kabīra Ne Aisī Odhī

Jyoń Kī Tyoń Dhara Dinhī

Chadariyā Jhinī Re Jhinī

He Rāma Nāma Rasa Bhinī
